Envy and Jealousy

Lecture series on the 5 types of Attractions. November 6, 2017.

Today, we’re talking about the feelings of jealousy and envy.

If the yin metal is too strong, we tend to enjoy being envious and attract situations that make us envious.

What is yin metal? Metal is a characteristic of the five elements and is associated with the lungs. What is the function of the lungs? Lungs are used for breathing, bringing air into the body, and expelling carbon dioxide. Carbon is the foundation and core of life. Life needs carbon, so exhaling represents giving life—sharing vitality with other beings. With healthy lungs, the exhalation is longer than the inhalation, clearly suggesting that we should give more than we receive.

Understanding this, yang lungs mean we are constantly giving out a lot, breathing strongly. When you exercise or play sports, your lungs work hard, yin metal decreases, and yang metal becomes stronger.

This is in terms of the body. From the perspective of viewpoints and thinking, there is also yin and yang. Perception shapes viewpoints. If we consistently focus on faults, flaws, and shortcomings in others, our perspective is considered yin metal (negative). But if we always focus on the good, the beauty, the fullness, and the completeness of others' personalities, our perspective is considered yang metal (positive).

As a result, when we have yin lungs, weak breathing, and yin viewpoints, we create an energy field that constantly makes us feel unhappy. This yin nature attracts people who give little vitality, have weak breathing, and consistently hold negative perspectives.

When we attract weak people, we dislike those who are stronger than us, fear those who are more talented, and feel extremely uncomfortable with those who are more accomplished or was praised more than us. The aforementioned feelings—fear, dislike, and discomfort—are characteristics of envy.

If we are in a relationship and a third person comes in and pulls the second person away, the emotion we feel is jealousy. Therefore, envy and jealousy are two terms that are often somewhat similar.

In general, when we are weak, when our lungs and vitality do not give out much, we tend to compare ourselves with others. We fear those who are stronger. Therefore, we must transform yin metal into yang metal to avoid attracting jealousy and envy.

Steps to Overcome Jealousy and Envy:

  1. Physical Exercise: Start by exercising and breathing strongly. This is essential. Practice methods like Integral Tai Chi, Health and Joy Exercise, or yoga—whatever works for you—but focus on breathing deeply. Some people practice physical exercises but don’t breathe deeply, and shallow breathing cannot develop yang metal.

  2. Change Your Perspective: You must change the way you see beauty. Not only recognize beauty but see it everywhere. Everything has something to be praised. Every dish has its unique flavor. Every sentence contains something valuable. Live in a way that always finds ways to express joy and bring happiness to those around you. Always see the positive things around you. Stop paying too much attention to yourself—it leads to comparisons.

By breathing strongly and seeing the beauty in everything, you can cultivate vitality and positivity, eliminating feelings of jealousy and envy.
